Oatlands quiet place BUT beautifully placed
We left the southernmost area in Tasmania Houn and parked at a tiny village named Oatlands .The name fits the area icon. We parked alongside a lovely old windmill (now only there as a tourist attraction) and a free camp site is available alongside the beautiful lake (unfortuanately the ablutions are a fair walk up a hill !! No problems coming back tho !!) Although this is a top spot we moved because we only have a few dys left in Tasmania and SO much more too see yet
Topiary,s of Railton Tasmania
Going thru a small town named Railton we were told the village (consisting of only few streets) would be the Top Tourist Topiary village of th future Although a few of the trees are formed, others are being trained on wire frames and when completed will look tremendous. The pictures on this blog dont do the growing of these plants proper justice BUT will be eventually be an area to envy
Grove and the Apple Museum Tasmania
We pulled into an apple museum and first thoughts were “how boring” BUT was pleasantly surprised once inside. We were greeted by the owner who gave a quick but informartive talk on APPLES .The fruit was introduced into Tasmania by the British and now there are literally 1000s of different varieties!! He went on to give a demonstration on an automatic apple peeler (used in the making of dried fruit/canned apples and of course my favourite use CIDER.Entry fee was a nominal $4.50 and a large museum was very interesting The wooden boxes reminded me of days gone by when we collected these from the local corner shop to use as firewood (then col was put on top to create the common indoor house fires in the 50/60s) The souvenir shop was very good and items were not very expensive !! Wel worth a visit if in this area

Bothwell Tasmania
We passed thru a lovely little village type called Bothwell and we were impressed so much with this idy litle place we stayed 2 nights and of course sampled the Pub (Castle) and met the local councillor (dressed in shorts and thongs !! for Pomms Thongs in Australia are flip flops in UK NOT a G string !!) What’s special about Bothwell? Home to the oldest golf course in the Southern Hemisphere. More than 50 stone cottages, houses and official buildings.Home to the Australasian Golf Museum. Guns can also be purchased here, hunters shoot deer an Kangaroo & Wallabies in the “off” season I had cause to visit the local Doctor who is available 2pm 5pm weekdays It was just like being part of A Country Practice !! Brilliant
EXTRA !! cos I was really impressed by Great Artistwork on Edna & Nelson
We came across these portraits in the Apple Museum and a closer look tells me they are made using very very small stones I thought they were very realistic and I was mesmerized by the originality in the way they have been created BUT the asking price of $1200 was just a tad too expensive for me !!!
The Scarecrows of Middleton
The Scarecrows of Middleton competition is held annually on the first Saturday of February, south of Hobart in Tasmania ‘in the heart of Scarecrow Country’. There are scarecrows on fences in paddocks and up trees — lavishly and humorously attired. Visitors to the fair are invited to vote for their favourites, which in the past have ranged from donkey carts to pirates. It was a great day spent looking for ?hidden” scarecrows and traffic behind me weren’t impressed by my constant stopping and starting the bus in the hunt for more Scarecrows We only managed to spot a few and judging day they all will be on display at the country fair hels in Middleton Sadly we don’t have time to hang around coz we still have so much more to see in this fascinating Island and just 6 more tourist days left !!! Because of the large amount of photos I will place them in a slide show
Antarctic Division Kingston Tasmania
We stopped of in Kingston to view the Antartic Exhibition. These buildings are the Hub of the Australian part of the Antartic and All services are organized from here,There a free small exhibition on how the stations in Antarctica are run Pioneers of days gone by must have been extremely brave or stupid !! Some of the equipment used for discovery is on display from an old sled to a shovel that has been held together with bits of string !! Well worth a visit
The Great Western Tiers
his a MUST place to visit ! The scenery is breath taking and a fantastic place tp be Photographs don,t do the justice this area deserves
The Great Western Tiers are the northern face of the Tasmanian Central Plateau, rising upto1444 m above sea level. The highest of the peaks is Ironstone Mountain, at 1,444m. We passed thru the quaint town on Deloraine on the way to the great Western and was intrigued by the tiny sculptures that are displayed on posts at regular intervals along the main high street ,the town was too busy to photograph them all
The Great Lake is a half man made lake located in the central north region of Tasmania within the sparsely inhabited Central Highlands municipality. Its original size was much smaller, it is dammed at its southern outflow for hydro-electricity production. It is Australia’s second largest freshwater lake, 1,030 metres above sea level. The lake has an area of 114 km². It is used for hydro electric power, fishing and tourism Nearby towns Liaweena and Miena are popular holiday shack destinations for local tourists, despite the area’s reputation as being one of the coldest places in the generally mild-weathered state.
