Cahills Crossing Jabiru Final day in Kakadu

Kakadu is an interesting place The Camp site was brillant .The crocodile Hotel was worth looking at But somehow seemed to be a lack of wild life? lots of diferent birds tho and some p[laces inaccesible for our bus BUT never the less quite interesting. Aboriginal ancient artworkon caves was thought provoking especially when details aregiven by the park rangers.Once again we met some lovely people and we still have a lot more yet to meet

Exploring Jabiru & Cahills Crossing East Alligator River NT

today we are travelling to a remote river crossing at Cahills Crossing that is supposedly infested with crocodiles ! Yesterday we cruised Jabiru town looking for points of interest and we came across a very fascinating hotel named Gagudju Crocodile Holiday Inn & is constructed in the shape of a Crocodile ! there is a terrific exhibition inside of a full length crocodile (stuffed) chasing a huge fish,Several aboriginal paintings were on show BUT a wee bit too pricey for us !!! The didgeridoo sale was not badly priced & I almost bought one.Annie reminded me I was going to enrol in a didg class in Alice Springs (that should be a hoot!!) Ill see if Annie wants to go for a paddle in Cahills !! The rest of yesterday was spent around the pool and we met up with friends we had met in Kirijini (approx 1500 kms away!!) apparently they remembered my hair & accent !!! World is getting smaller

JUST IN >>>WOW !! we were just here !! taken from ABC TV report 13/09/10

A group of women taking part in a Northern Territory fishing challenge at the weekend had a lucky escape when a crocodile tried to push over their boat.Toni Flouse was one of the women competing in the Secret Women’s Business Fishing Challenge at Corroboree, about 90 kilometres east of Darwin. She says they were fishing in a bay of lilies when they spotted an old lure floating in the water. The group considered reaching out and retrieving it but Ms Flouse jokingly said, “No, no, Mr Crocodile might come out of the water”.Sure enough, out of nowhere, came a three-metre crocodile.”It was just amazing,” she said.”Not five seconds later a croc just launched itself out of the water and smashed itself against the boat.”He looked like he was aiming for [one of the women on the boat], that’s for sure.””She was sitting on the casting deck at the bow.”It got a bit crazy to be honest – a little bit of swearing and panic.
“She actually jumped up and repositioned herself very hastily.”We were beside ourselves, honestly. It was quite scary.Ms Flouse said the boat had “battle scars” on its side after the attack.”He hit the boat really hard,” she said.”We all talked about the fact that we would absolutely reconsider standing on the casting deck to fish in future.”If we had been standing we honestly believe that from the jolt against the boat that we would’ve lost balance and had fallen over.”

More from Adelaide River

This river is fantastic & well worth a look

September 12, 2010 Posted by | Uncategorized | 1 Comment

Today we travelled over 200kms to Jabiru (heart of Kakadu) & stopped for a cruise on the way

on route we stopped at the mighty Adelaide River top end of the Northern Territory & took a cruise. It was spectacular!! the bird life was awesome reminiscent of old Tarzan Jungle Movies ! I was very tempted to do his Animal yodel call!! The water was (is) very murky. After a while 2 eyes came towards and the surfaced. It was 6 metre salt water crocodile!! These compared to the fresh water crocs are VERY dangerous, We were treated to a magnificent show,The tour advisor dangle pork chops from a very long pole & dangled it mid air. What happened next was incredible. The croc JUMPED out of the water in an attempt to ‘catch’ the lure (it eventually did) we were told this croc is about 70yrs old. Further down river more meat was dangled and half a dozen crocs performed for us again by leaping out of the water !! Apparently this is NOT learnt from humans BUT is a natural way of swooping on prey above the water line !! We spotted a beautiful white crested eagle on the trip & a group of young eagles flocked around the boat tacking offerings given to them by the crew.As we left the boat we were confronted by a huge lizard, who eventually disappeared into the riveside & we havent even reached our destination yet !!

farewell Darwin as we head for the World Famous Kakadu

took a while but Darwin is starting to on grow on me! The shopping centre we saw at Casuarina (Darwin Suburb) was HUGE !!anything you need can be found in this centre We went to the Cinema within the complex, wasting time while our CB was being fitted (Sorcerers Apprentice ,recommended for all ages) and it is a comfortable theatre. We utilized the Darwin Bus Service ( once again using my free bus pass!) and the drivers were very courteous & professional,a credit to their employers. After the movie we collected our bus complete with NEW CB & naturally I had a play with it.So far,so good.We are currently packing up,filling the bus up with water ready for our further adventures starting tomorrow. We head off to Crocodile Dundee Country early in the am to the internationally known KAKADU.Once again we may be out of computer signal & may not be able to do my Blog until we come into signal.Stay tuned for hopefully more exciting adventures !!
